Bangalow is the only intact Federation village on Australia’s east coast. This unique, historic town with a modern style is only 15 minutes from Byron Bay and just over an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast.
It is said that the name ‘Bangalow’ is derived from the Aboriginal word “bangalla” which meant either ‘a low Hill or a kind of palm tree’ in the language of the Banjalang Aboriginal people who lived in the area before European settlement in the 1840s.
Bangalow Palms are still a major characteristic of the town. Bangalow has everything you need for a getaway day trip or a luxurious holiday.
There is a wonderful selection of boutique B&B accommodation options, both in the township and in the surrounding hinterland.
Begin your day at Butcher Baker located on Byron Street with a delicious selection of breakfast options or tantalising lunch choices for the later start. Enjoy a cold local beer on tap, a wine or a cheeky cocktail or sit back and relax after perusing the counter of tasty treats.
Then take your time to explore all the beautiful clothing boutiques, the most gorgeous homewares and art galleries all within a leisurely stroll around the village. There are plaques dotted around the village on the buildings that give a fascinating insight into the history of Bangalow.
Throughout the day sweet treats such as freshly baked sourdough, pastries or donuts made fresh in-house at Butcher Baker can be enjoyed with specialty coffee that is expertly roasted by locals Ground Control Coffee.
